MICHELE OKA DONER – FLUENT IN THE LANGUAGE OF DREAMS

ALSO ON VIEW: NEW WORK BY JACK CRAIG

FEBRUARY 16 – MAY 5, 2018

Wasserman Projects is pleased to present, Fluent in the Language of Dreams, a solo exhibition of renowned artist Michele Oka Doner. This exhibition revisits for the first time the large-scale floor installation Pages I and II, which she created almost 40 years ago for her first solo museum show in 1978 at the Detroit Institute of Arts. For the exhibition, which opens on February 16, 2018, the artist will recreate the original installation and add Pages III and IV, extending the scope and experience of the work and re-contextualizing it within her career’s long engagement with organic forms and the evolution of language. The installation will be complemented by a selection of Oka Doner’s large-scale sculptures, works on paper, books, and design objects, made with a wide-range of materials. Together, the works offer a lens into Oka Doner’s dynamic practice, shaped in part by her studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and her time spent living in Detroit, between 1969-1981. The exhibition will be on view through May 5, 2018.

Also on view, an exhibition of new work by Detroit-based designer Jack Craig. Curated by Butter Projects, and presented in collaboration with Salon 94 Design, the exhibition will position Craig’s functional and sculptural objects within a landscape of living plants, creating an indoor environment akin to a Japanese garden. On view through May 5, the exhibition highlights Craig’s creative process and material experimentations. Craig’s practice is inspired by the creative potential of common materials, which he sources from hardware stores and construction retailers. His furniture, lighting works, and installations are characterized by the surprising relationships made between these materials, and the unexpected outcomes of both subtle and forceful manipulations that alter their physicality and functions.
