Wasserman Projects is pleased to present our Summer exhibition Portrait Orientation featuring Detroit-based artists Nancy Mitchnick and Lauren Kalman, alongside select works from Italian sculptors Willy, Christian, and Matthias Verginer. The exhibition includes a wide range of media brought together by their exceptional attention to craft and the artists’ classical yet unconventional approaches to representing the figure.
Mitchnick’s expressive use of paint to depict urban and natural landscapes tells a story of her relationship to places and spaces over the last 40 years of her prolific career. Set amongst environments as portraiture, are Kalman’s new series of “figurative” ceramic vessels To Have or To Hold… that retain imprints of the artist’s body from holding the objects prior to firing. These moments that form who we become and the impressions that are made carry through Verginers wood carved sculptures rooted in traditions and techniques that have been passed down from Willy to his twin sons Christian and Matthias.
In conjunction with Portrait Orientation, Wasserman Works features Considering a Young Man – an exhibition by Tony Whitfield and Whitfield CoLabs. A meditation on formative experiences in Whitfields’s life as a mature, queer, Black artist, he engages in an object dialogue with friends and colleagues that follows an expansive visual journey through prints, textiles, and sculptural works of art and design.
